Officers of the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) carried out a drug bust on Jan. 26 that led to the seizure of the single largest haul of heroin in three years.

In a statement released on Saturday, Jan. 27, the CNB said it had arrested three suspected drug traffickers at HarbourFront and seized the following quantities of drugs:

  • 8.8 kg of heroin
  • 460 g of Ice, and
  • 70 Erimin-5 tablets

The estimated value of the haul is more than S$666,000.

Bulk of drugs found in motorcycle, not car

In their statement, the CNB described how officers observed a 32-year-old Singaporean male and a 35-year-old Malaysian male enter a toilet at HarbourFront Tower 2 together, but leave separately.

One group of officers followed the Singaporean to his car, and observed another 39-year-old Singaporean guy get inside. Both of them were arrested, and here's what was found in this car:

  • About 2.2kg of heroin,
  • 460g of ‘Ice’ and
  • 70 Erimin-5 tablets.

A digital weighing scale and numerous empty plastic packets were also recovered.

The Malaysian was later arrested at his workplace at HarbourFront Tower 2 and escorted to his motorcycle parked in the vicinity, where, fascinatingly, the bulk of the drugs were found — 6.6kg of heroin, packed in different bundles.

Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, trafficking more than 15 grams of diamorphine (pure heroin) carries the death penalty.

This amount may seem small, but is sufficient to make 1,250 straws, by the way, that can feed the addiction of 180 heroin abusers a week.

Investigations are ongoing.
