On Nov. 14, 2017, Darren Spruyt's mother was alone in their Bedok South home when she was approached by a man who introduced himself as a contractor.

The apparent contractor came with an invoice in hand and told her that he was there to inspect the ceiling of her home.

Refused to verify himself

She then asked for proof of his identity, but he declined.

Instead, he threatened to take a photo of the homeowner since she refused to comply with him.

Unable to trust this man, she closed the door on him.

The contractor returned along with another man, using a laser pointer to intimidate the homeowner, but to no avail.

Similar encounters

After sharing his mother's experience on Facebook, the post went viral with over 2,000 shares.

***Update 21/11/17 - Police Report has officially been filed. Will update as the case progresses. Town council has also put up notices in the neighborhood clarifying that they have not engaged any contractors. (Notice in comments)

Shady “contractor” went to my house earlier this evening when my mother was home alone and said he was there to inspect our ceiling and had an invoice.

My mother asked for his tag and he didnt want to show. He then threatened to take my mother's photo too.

After closing the door, the "contractor" returned to my house with another man with a laser pointer trying to intimidate my mother but she refused to open the door.

Please be careful!

Netizens react

A number of netizens were confused and amused as to how intimidating a laser pointing could possibly be.

"Laser pointer?! Ahaha bring a light saber I might be afraid."

"How to intimidate using laser pointer? Lol"

But some shared similar experiences, with a few claiming that they encountered the same man.

"Oh I think he is the same man that came to our house too at Bedok area. He is so rude!"

"Looks like the one that came to our house yesterday?"

"It happened to me as well just last week. There was a guy who also approached us with similar tactics. I reported this to the East Coast Town Council."

Alleged contractor comments on post

However, it seems like the alleged contractor has also commented on Spruyt's Facebook post:

"I did not do anything wrong, I'm just earning a living. What you think or said I won't mind. But the truth is not like that. I will still continue to work."
