Woman evades paying $10.90 taxi fare for a week, says she is "busy" & "looking for money"

Taxi drivers really don't have it easy.

Among the myriad cases of taxi fare evasion, this one probably stands out a little more.

A female passenger has avoided paying for her fare of S$10.90 for a week (and counting), citing marriage problems as her reason. This, alleges the driver's son, after 200 missed calls and a number of texts to her.

The son of the 58-year-old driver, whom we will refer to as Syn, then took to Facebook to warn others who might have a similar encounter.

Below are screenshots of the original Facebook post, which we will not be embedding or linking to as the post contains information on the identity of the passenger (who we are at this time unable to ascertain is the perpetrator of this offence):

Alighting without paying

The passenger, named as Cheryl in the Facebook post, took an SMRT cab from Yishun to Jalan Kayu on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 11:45am.

This was how she managed to alight without paying:

  1. Cheryl initially left her valuables in the taxi to get cash, which she claimed to be lacking.
  2. When she came back, she told Syn that she had no cash.
  3. She then gave him a fake number.
  4. Syn then told her to give him a missed call, which was how he eventually got her real number.
  5. Cheryl then promised to transfer the money into Syn's bank account.
  6. Two days later and 200 missed calls later, Syn's son texted her, to which she finally responded.
  7. The following are screenshots of the exchange between Syn's son and Cheryl:

Now, read all this bearing in mind that it isn't $10,000 she owes, or even $100. It's $10.90.

Really not cool.

Unfortunately, we understand from Syn that Cheryl has yet to transfer the fare to the driver. Syn and his father have told Mothership they will make a police report against her.

According to the Public Transport Council, taxi fare evaders will be fined $200 over and above the original fare they have to make good. If they are caught doing this a second time, the fine is doubled. Further repeat offenders will be charged in court.

[UPDATE at Oct. 11, 4:33pm: The younger Syn subsequently informed Mothership that an anonymous person has made a payment of S$10.90 via iBanking and requested he remove the post. As it is, Syn has privatised his post and will not be pursuing this matter any further.
