One of the ways to deal with inappropriate behaviour directed at girls and women in Singapore is to openly talk about it -- even though if it is after the fact.

This is important as it demonstrates that you are not alone and there is an issue that is more prevalent than most people think.

Pervert in Hougang

Enter Redditor pleaseki11me, who claims she is a 16-year-old secondary school girl and she was recently harassed by a pervert in Hougang.

The Secondary 4 student recounted her experience on the Reddit forum about how she was at Hougang mall when she encountered a man who pestered her for her personal information, and even tried to make physical contact with her.

The incident occurred on Sept. 15 at around 7pm.

The pervert's modus operandi

The girl wrote that she was wearing her school uniform at that time and had her name tag on.

Her name tag was blue, indicating that she is a Secondary 4 student.

The pervert approached her while she was queuing at the drink store, and asked her what school she was from.

Not wanting to appear rude, she told him.

However, he didn't stop there. Looking at her name tag, he then proceeded to ask which year she was in, all the while giving her looks that made her uncomfortable.

As she didn't want him to know any more information than necessary, she lied and told him that she is in Secondary 3.

He then asked her why she was lying to him, and said something like, "blue means you're in Secondary 4, so how come you're wearing blue in Secondary 3?"

/u/pleaseki11me lied again, and said she had been retained.

Despite being uncomfortable, she just treated him as a busybody.

Grabbed by the elbow

As she continued ignoring him, the pervert walked away. 

/u/pleaseki11me then took off her name tag in case he came back -- which he did, barely two to three minutes later.

He tapped her on the shoulder and asked, "Where's your name tag ah?", indicating that he had been noticing her enough.

When /u/pleaseki11me asked him if it mattered where he name tag was, he changed the subject and started saying things like, "oh the way you tie hair very pretty", and even tried to grab her by the elbow.

She moved away immediately. Even then, he asked for her name again.

At this point, she said loudly: "Can you stop pestering me? You're being disgusting."

He finally walked away, saying, "Oh ok".

The same pervert had harassed her friends

After she managed to get away from the pervert, /u/pleaseki11me went back to where her friends were seated and recounted her experience.

She realised that she was not the only one with such an experience -- her friend had experienced something similar.

As the two girls conversed, they noticed it also sounded like what a third friend had encountered before as well.

They later found out that such incidents have been going on since last year, specifically to their cohort. The pervert even had his own nickname among the girls, but what he was called was not revealed in the post.

It turns out, he is obsessed with secondary school girls enough to the extent he attended a school carnival.

Other students said he would approach girls with the intent of presumably connecting with them on the Instagram platform later on.

This was how one of the girls manged to have a photo of the pervert and sent it to /u/pleaseki11me, thus confirming his identity.

/u/pleaseki11me warns that the pervert frequents the Hougang area, and on occasion, even Sengkang.

She advises other girls not to share any personal info with him.
