An undergraduate has supposedly written a confession post on NTU Confessions speaking lowly of her boyfriend's profession of choice: Joining the Singapore Civil Defence Force full-time.

In case you can't see the text, here's what it says:

"Dilemma. Huge one. My boyfriend of two years have decided to be an SCDF regular. Initially i was ok until my parents commented that its a dirty hands job done by certain people only. To me personally, army is still ok but police or scdf is low class jobs Done by "some people" only. I tried to convince my bf because he has a degree why should he do that kind of job. But all those pleas fell on death ears. I feel like i need to save my parents face too. And with that kind of manual labor job i can forget about having a posh wedding.

Whenever my friends asked me what kind of profession he is in, i would just lie and say that he is doing some business startup, no concrete plans yet. Any advice?"

Wait what?

Assuming this is a real dilemma and not a troll post, there's a lot to unpack here -- besides the fact that a supposed undergrad can't spell "deaf" properly.

So let's break it down, line by line.

1. "Parental objections"

So, she was okay with his choice until her parents piped up.

While it's undeniable that SCDF regulars get a bit dirty while on duty, that's because THEY'RE BATTLING FIRES. Show me one fire that doesn't spew smoke and soot.

I wonder what happens if her parents' house catches fire. Would they shun the firemen who try to rescue them because their uniforms are not sparkling clean?

"2. Some people"

Ah ha, the picture becomes clearer. I wonder why the armed forces would be an acceptable career choice for this girl, since they also dirty their uniforms while on duty and work with their hands.

However, only the SCDF and not-so-coincidentally the police would be considered "low-class" by this girl and her family, as they are only done by "some people". It's a sad indictment of our society that an ostensible uni student would hold these views in this day and age.

3. "Degree-holder"

With the glut of degree holders in the job market, the white-collar way of life is under threat. The government has been encouraging people to learn new skills, and one learns all kinds of useful skills in the SCDF. In fact, a fireman or a paramedic might enjoy greater job security than the typical office peon in the next few years.

4. "Save face"

All right, first things first, the wage packets that SCDF personnel get are the realest. If her boyfriend does indeed graduate with a degree, he stands a good chance of joining the SCDF as an officer.

A direct entry lieutenant earns a starting salary of S$3,450 to S$4,550.

And that's even before all the signing on bonuses, duty pay, and the incentives only increase as one rises up the ranks.

How is doing a business start-up better in monetary terms? Not only we've established that this girl has no idea what the hell she's talking about, we've also established that she can't even google, "How much can uni graduates expect to earn if they join the SCDF", like I did.
