Jeremy Sim, the devoted husband who decided to sell off his collection of Star Wars memorabilia to make room for his late wife's belongings, has succeeded in his mission — to the tune of S$11,800 raised for charity.

His story was previously reported by The Asian Parent, which recounted how his wife died of cancer in May, leaving Sim and his son Zachary.

As she wanted to donate her belongings to charity after she died, her grieving husband wanted to keep them to remember her by, and decided instead to sell his entire collection of Star Wars memorabilia, and donate the proceeds to the KK Hospital Health Fund.

A galaxy unites

And so at the recent 2017 edition of Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention on the weekend of September 9 and 10, Sim manned a booth through Saturday.

Local Star Wars enthusiasts and organised groups like the 501st Singapore Garrison, the Cathar Base Singapura Rebel Legion and the Singapore branch of the Galactic Senate rallied after Sim's cause.

The 501st even organised their own separate fundraising event, also to benefit the KKH Health Fund on the second day of the STGCC, raising $2,000 in donations.

Other people contributed in other ways. Disney artist James C. Mulligan, who read Sim's story, presented him with a piece of original art depicting Princess Leia and R2-D2:

He also recounted that an anonymous well-wisher turned up and spent $1,000 to buy back Sim's favourite keepsakes to return them to him, telling him to pass them on to his son one day.

During his interview with The Asian Parent, Sim said:

"Those with loved ones, continue to cherish every moment and shower them with all your love. Remember, you have the chance to choose the outcome, but we didn’t have a choice at all."

In total, $13,800 was raised, and will be donated to the KKH Health Fund, certainly a fitting conclusion to this chapter for Sim.
