Singapore may be a city-state, but there exists an unquenchable mystical need among some segments of the population that cannot be quelled as they try to come to terms with modern everyday living.

Role of magical thinking

Objects and practices found in Singapore considered by some quarters to be part of the occult domain or mere superstition are derived from traditional Chinese society and belief systems from the surrounding Southeast Asian countries.

From talismans and amulets, to alleged corpse oil and spirit channelling, a sizeable number of Singaporeans today still actively seek alternatives to bring about greater ease and assurances, either as a form of shortcut or insurance in life.

The origins might not be well-known any more, but here are some interesting objects and practices that can still be found in Singapore:

1. Penis-shaped amulets

The origins can be traced to India, which then spread to Thailand.

These amulets are meant to charm and attract lovers, especially when a male desires a female partner. All the male has to do is wear it on himself. Multiple charms can be worn by one person at the same time.

They can also be displayed in shops for prosperity.

2. Glass amulets with scrolls

The scroll inside the amulet is inscribed with words that form a prayer. Wearing them can possibly improve your health, luck and wealth.

3. Talisman drinks

Talismans are holy pieces of paper that can supposedly protect one from evil and ward off evil spirits.

After reciting a prayer on these talismans, you can burn them, place them in water, and drink them for your personal protection.

4. Voodoo dolls

There are many types of voodoo dolls. Some serve the purpose of love, healing and guidance, while others are meant for cursing and hurting others. They are commonly used to communicate with other living spirits and persuade them to do something for you.

5. New age crystals

For those who believe in new age stuff, crystals can heal, purify negative energy, and bring good luck. The crystals themselves are believed to hold the power of the earth and can bring inner balance and harmony.

All you have to do is wear them on yourself, and they can look like fashionable jewellery. Through individualised spiritual practices, the crystals can bless you.

6. Dead women corpse oil

The oil is purportedly obtained from the corpse of a pregnant woman who died with a baby in her womb, by rolling a candle flame over the corpse's skin.

The chosen corpse is usually one that died from an unnatural cause, i.e. suicide, as practitioners believe that she is usually a vengeful spirit.

It is said to have great power and can protect you at all times.

7. Spirit mediums

The channeling of spirits is still a thriving practice in Singapore. Some practitioners here channel Chinese gods, such as Drunken Monk (Ji Gong) and Monkey God (Qi Tian Da Sheng). These are carried out for a fee.

When the medium is possessed, you can ask questions regarding your life and future and these gods will answer them via the medium. Some also seek cures to illnesses.
