S'pore a capella group does epic mashup of 22 National Day songs past through present

Make National Day songs Great Again!

You might have heard of American pop a capella group Pentatonix.

MICappella is arguably Singapore's answer to that: a six-member team consisting of Peter Huang, Tay Kexin, Calin Wong, Juni Goh, Goh Mingwei and Eugene Yip.

And together, they create really awesome instrument-free music with their voices, and also take creative spins on existing tunes — frequently making them even better than they originally were, effectively making it their own.

Take this video they did of a mashup of hits like "Work from Home", "We don't talk anymore", "This is what you came for", "Cake by the Ocean", "Can't stop the Feeling", and "Sorry", for instance:

Or these covers they did of "漂向北方" and "不该", two very popular and very widely-played Chinese songs now:

And you can see they're going places too —

  • In March this year, for instance, the group toured Germany, putting up four shows in Hamburg, Munich and Berlin;
  • In May, they came up tops at the Moscow Spring A Capella Festival; and
  • In June, the group made a trip to Kuala Lumpur for a promotional album tour.

And that's why you'd know, more or less, that their spin on things would in all likelihood be pretty good.
