A lift at Block 542 Jurong West Avenue 1 plunged four floors on Saturday night, July 1 at around 9.40pm.

According to The Straits Times, the lift had stopped on the fourth floor and a 48-year-old man had exited the lift with one leg out of the door when the passengers heard a sound like a cable snapping.

In the lift with the man was his sister, brother-in-law, and 10-year-old daughter. They were visiting a relative's house for Hari Raya when the incident occurred.

In a split second, the man's in-law saw the lift tilt and instinctively pulled the man back in. The lift door closed and plunged to the ground.

After the lift hit the ground, the man's sister cried and screamed on the floor of the lift saying that her leg was broken.

The man saw the lift had come to a stop about one-third of the way below ground level when he looked out the window.

The man's nephew ran to the ground floor after hearing the noise and felt the vibrations. He attempted to pry the door open from the outside, but was unable to do so.

The man then forced the lift door open from the inside, and the family evacuated before the Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived.

The woman was hospitalised for a fractured leg

The man and his brother-in-law suffered from back pain, while the man's daughter suffered bruises.

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has since suspended the lift at Block 542 Jurong West Avenue 1 for further investigation.

The lift is only allowed to resume its operation after the investigations are completed and the necessary rectification works by the Town Council's lift contractor are certified by the Professional Engineer, which must be done to the satisfaction of BCA.
