Lawrence Wong's Facebook post tries to dispel controversy about PM Lee's Deed of Gift

Whether in his public or private capacity, PM Lee had every right to obtain the Deed of Gift, Wong says.

National development minister Lawrence Wong has come out with a Facebook statement in a bid to clarify the circumstances surrounding the Deed of Gift issued by the late Lee Kuan Yew's estate to the National Heritage board.

The controversy surrounding this issue is that PM Lee had managed to obtain a copy of the Deed not from his siblings, but from the National Heritage Board, wearing his Prime Minister hat.

The crux of this issue, according to Wong in his post, is that PM Lee is wearing two hats — both equally important and justifiable as his right to information.

As Lee Kuan Yew's son and one of the beneficiaries of LKY's estate, writes Wong, it was inevitable PM Lee is entitled to be informed. What more, Wong added, in Lee's formal capacity as prime minister, who would have to be kept informed (no matter who the PM happens to be) of the contents and presentation of an exhibition about Singapore's founding leaders, which included LKY.

Wong wrote:

The Prime Minister was given the deed in his official capacity.

If Mr Lee Hsien Loong had asked for the information in his private capacity, he would have been entitled to know about the exhibition and the items from the estate, given his position as the eldest son of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew and beneficiary of the estate.

Wong also pointed out that the demolition clause in the late Lee Kuan Yew's will came in two parts, with only the first part that the younger siblings stipulated in the Deed of Gift needing to be made public — a fresh development in this ongoing meandering story.

This condition, Wong added, caused some concern among the ministers, including himself and DPM Teo Chee Hean, but was allowed to stand.

Wong said he decided to put out this latest post containing the above relevant details early, ahead of the July 3 parliament sitting, saying he would furnish a fuller explanation on that day.

Hsien Yang responds: Deed of gift signed by NHB, Wong "changed his mind" 2 days later

True to form and speed, Hsien Yang has responded to Wong's post on his Facebook page, with this new revelation: that NHB had agreed to the terms and signed the Deed of Gift with Hsien Yang and Wei Ling, BUT two days later, Wong allegedly changed his mind.
