Hundreds of diners turned up at Buddy Hoagies Cafe and Grill in Nee Soon Community Club the last four days for one last hurrah.

This was after news made the rounds last Friday on social media that the 12-year-old family-run cafe had been asked to make way for a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet next month.

Theresa Ng, the co-owner of the cafe who is in her 50s, said she was happy to see so many diners before the eatery closed down: "We are very overwhelmed by the large increase in customers over the weekend as well as yesterday. Very grateful to all."

On April 14, the owners failed to win a new tender to run the food service at the CC and was told that the cafe would have a month to vacate the place.

That Nee Soon CC outlet is the flagship store of Buddy Hoagies, where they have been operating since 2004.

The lease of the cafe ended withing a month on May 15, but was extended to June 15 after Ng appealed to get a one-month extension after seeing Nee Soon GRC MP Lee Bee Wah.

The People's Association, which runs the CCs, has defended its decision to award the tender to a higher bidder, saying that a public tender for the site was called according to government procurement rules when Ng's six-year lease was running out.

Currently, Buddy Hoagies still has two outlets, one in Waterway Point in Punggol and the other at Bukit Timah Shopping Centre.
