Old man in Ang Mo Kio regularly waits for strangers to buy him a meal because he doesn't want to burden his family

How can society help?

Here's a story that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time:

An old man in his 80s regularly stakes out in Ang Mo Kio central waiting for passers-by to buy him a meal.

He said he does this because he and his wife are relying on their son who in his 50s and only earning $1,000 or so a month, and he does not wish to further add on to the financial burden on the family.

The old man also said he is usually helped by younger people on the streets, who are generally less suspicious of him and his intentions.

This is the original post by Evan Poh, who reasoned that young people are more likely to help because the older people in Singapore are more jaded with life:

was walking along Ang Mo Kio Central tonight, when out of the corner of my eye I spotted an old uncle standing blankly...

It's not hard to imagine that he doesn't get approached by anyone offering to buy him a meal on some days. 😞
