NUS Students' Union issues response to Mothership.sg on the alleged lack of transparency of its funds

In its response to Teo, NUSSU said that its definition of transparency is more nuanced and it "primarily entails a state of mind".

The National University of Singapore Students' Union has written in to Mothership.sg to request for the right of reply to NUS student Teo Yu Sheng's allegations.

A little background story:

Teo, from NUS School of Business, has taken to the public domain to air his grievances over what he perceives to be a lack of transparency on the part of the NUSSU, which is unable provide a breakdown of how millions of dollars in income and expenditure was allocated in 2013.

Below is the full reply from Shermon Ong, Vice President, 35th Executive Committee, NUSSU:

We refer to your article at http://mothership.sg/2014/09/one-guy-is-trying-to-find-out-why-nus-student-union-left-a-few-million-dollars-in-income-and-expenditure-unexplained/

In view of the serious allegations and aspersions levelled by Mr Teo against us, we have published a full-fledged response and we hope that Mothership.sg is able to publish our response so that readers will have a more holistic picture of the saga (made worse by Mr Teo's deletion of the original Facebook post). The response can be found at

Thank you!

The lengthy response from NUSSU provided the email exchanges between Shermon and Teo, with NUSSU providing its own definition of transparency.

Well, it still doesn't explain a few questions we have. We have since posed these questions to NUSSU:

1. I understand that you've invited Mr Teo to be part of the NUSSU Council Finance Standing Committee. However, I wonder why both NUSSU and Mr Teo preferred to have this email exchange instead meeting up face-to-face.

2. How would you assess NUSSU's relationship with the Office of Finance Services?

3. Following Mr Teo's pt, has NUSSU requested for more detailed breakdowns of its finances from the OFS in recent years?

4. You mentioned in the conclusion that some student groups were disciplined for operating private accounts by the University, but the NUSSU Exco is not one of them. Do you have examples of these student groups? We wish to understand how widespread the issue is.

NUSSU assured us that they will respond to our queries later.
