MediaCorp fined S$6,300 after radio DJs forgot to censor their thoughts on air

They used the words "a-hole" and "asshole" on two separate days during on-air banter.

The Media Development Authority (MDA) has fined state broadcaster MediaCorp $6,300.

On March 20 this year, Class95FM DJ Joe Augustin of the Morning Express called Cassandra Chiu, a visually-impaired woman who owns a guide dog named Esme, an "a-hole".

Augustin's co-host, Glenn Ong, then called Augustin an “a**hole” for using the word on Chiu.

Augustin's gripe was that Chiu constantly posts on Facebook “inflammatory remarks” about visually-impaired people being discriminated against in Singapore.

Two days before the DJs banter on air, Chiu had posted on Facebook that she was refused free muffins at a McDonald's outlet because she is blind.

Previously, she was also vocal online about being rejected at other establishments, such as clothing store Forever 21 and ice cream joint Haagen-Dazs, because her guide dog was not allowed in.

On the next day’s show, the pair held an on-air straw poll on the appropriateness of using the term, where the ought-to-be-censored word was repeated again.

MDA was notified of the words being used on-air by Chiu herself and another listener who wrote in to express concern over the matter.
