Chelsea player David Luiz, who has a glorious head of hair, whacks Sports Hub patchy pitch

Singapore is a tropical country but cannot grow grass properly.

In what is yet another negative story about the legendary Sports Hub grass turf, Chelsea defender David Luiz criticised the pitch, calling it "not very good".

However, labelling the pitch "not very good" is perhaps Luiz's attempt to be polite.

The Brazilian told ESPNFC after the 1-2 defeat against eventual winner Inter Milan on Saturday night: "[But] it was a difficult game, especially because of the pitch. The pitch is not very good... you always need two or three touches. You cannot accelerate the game with one or two touches."

Reigning EPL champions Chelsea Football Club were in town for the International Champions Cup but left empty handed as they lost two consecutive matches against Bayern Munich (2-3) and Inter Milan (1-2).

That said, Luiz called Singapore a great country with great atmosphere.

Not the first time.

Of course, every Singaporean knows this is not the first criticism of our legendary pitch.

Juventus complained about it too. The team’s coach Massimiliano Allegri said after the match that he didn’t field former striker Carlos Tevez because of the sandy pitch.

So did Brazil. Then Brazil coach Dunga said: "Most of it is sand, not grass... It’s going to be hard to pass the ball. There is more chance of getting injured in this field."

Then a rugby match had to be cancelled because of the pitch.

Let's not get into other non-sporting issues like this one.

Anyway, Sports Hub subsequently abandoned the hybrid pitch for a "lay and play" natural pitch solution.

Just last year, then Sports Hub chief executive officer Manu Sawhney said the pitch will only get better.

Then he quit in May 2017.

To look on the bright side, at least the pitch started out shitty. So anything better than shitty is a win for Singaporeans.

The same cannot be said about SMRT.
