A pair of Singaporean dart players caused a huge upset at a world tournament on Thursday by beating two world champion players after triumphing over them in the first round.

Now, darts is not a sport Singapore is known for.

Most of the time, it's the likes of swimming and bowling, which is what makes this story so much more special.

First, we should introduce you to Gary Anderson and Peter Wright, two Scottish dart players.

1) Gary Anderson, 46, World no. 2

This guy's a two-time world champion, previously ranked World number 1, and is currently ranked World number 2. He also happens to be known as "The Flying Scotsman", renowned for having one of the smoothest dart throws.

2) Peter Wright, 47, World no. 3

Wright, nicknamed "Snakebite", is currently ranked just behind his countryman Anderson. An equally formidable opponent to have and known for his ever-colour-changing mohawks designed by his hairdresser wife

The ultimate underdogs

Now, bearing in mind the brief background of these two guys, Singapore sent the duo of local dart veteran Paul Lim and Harith Lim to the 2017 World Cup of Darts, organised by the global dart body Professional Darts Corporation. This year's edition is being played out in Frankfurt, Germany.

The competition's first round, which involves teams from 32 participating nations, saw our brave pair of biblical Davids drawing the above-mentioned Goliaths on the first day of matches between countries randomly drawn against one another.

And as you can see, the reference applies here because according to the PDC's ranking, the two Scots are listed in second and third place, while our Singaporeans aren't even on it.

According to darts statistics database Darts Database, though, Paul, 63, is ranked 451st, while Harith, 47, is ranked 879th.

That said, though, the elder Lim is famed as a dart player for being the first to score a perfect nine-dart finish at a World Championship, but that was 27 years ago in 1990.

How the match went down

In the PDC World Cup, the pairs played in a "Best of Nine" set — in other words, the first team to win five sets wins the match. In order to win a set, a team must throw their darts in a precise combination in order to eliminate points from 501 to exactly zero.

And in the match between Singapore and Scotland, the elder Lim — who, incidentally according to a Sky Sports report, happens to be the oldest player in the competition — netted us our first two wins in the bag. While the Scots rebounded mid-way through, the two Lims took it home, with an incredible opportunity seized by the elder Lim in the winning round for Singapore.

"To represent a country is the biggest thing ever"

In an interview the Lims did with Sky Sports after the historic upset, the two were of course super joyful — and rightfully so — but also completely cognisant that this was but the first round of the competition, and there is yet plenty more for them to face.

Asked how the moment of victory over the World number 2 and 3 felt like, Paul Lim had this to say:

"I tell you what, this is the moment. Because I think it's so much so it's not representing yourself, but it's for your country and all that. And it is an honour. I mean to represent a country is the biggest thing ever. So for me to win this one, the first round, against Scotland, it was actually like a dream come true anyway, that's all."

The elder Lim continued, noting that they would have been happy just to draw with the Scots, and played all the way knowing it was going to be a tough competition for them, even though this is his fourth outing at the World Cup.

When asked for his thoughts, his humble partner Harith said:

"I'm just a best supporting actor so I'm feeling so good now. Thank you so much...

It's a partnership, so we've been doing this for so many years, so I think we take it one leg at a time, one game at a time. That's what it is."

The Lims will next face the team from Spain, which beat Japan in their first round match, on Saturday, 8pm Singapore time.
