S'pore's most enduring hoax returns again, and guess what, it's still fake

Fake love.

For those who were around in 2015, Singapore was momentarily gripped by this "scam":

The TLDR is that a "deliveryman" will call the house of an unsuspecting "victim", informs them he will be there in 30 mins, comes over in 30 minutes, gives them a basket of flowers and wine.

The deliveryman will then tell them someone sent them that basket, reject any cash payment for delivery charge, swipes their credit card, and then takes $5,000 from them the next day.

Scary, right?

Yup, it's so insanely frightening that almost two years later, the deliveryman is back at it again.

And like fine wine, this hoax has not only endured, it has grown more sophisticated over time.

The 2015 version amassed over 8,000 shares, and the new and improved version is already onto more than 3,000 shares within three days.

Fakebook post

The main reason why this scam might be so enduring is because it sounds so believable and realistic.

Well, that's because it is based on an actual incident that happened in 2008.

But the caveat is that it happened in Australia, and that guy got jailed — also in Australia.

The 2015 Singapore version, and by extension the 2017 version, were both based on that incident.

Specifically, this incident.

Singapore version

This is how the exchange would go down in Singapore.

Deliveryman: You got wine and flowers.

Auntie: Wah, who send one?

Deliveryman: Dunno, but you must use credit card to pay $3.50.

*Door slams shut*

End of story.

We look forward to debunking this again in 2020.
