Duan Wu Festival - 端午节 (or Ba Zhang Day to some of you out there) is here and that means one thing - oily, fragrant packs of rice dumplings assaulting all your senses.

But first, a quick primer on the Duan Wu Festival:  The story goes that in ancient China, Qu Yuan, a beloved poet committed suicide by jumping into the Miluo River after the capital he lived in was captured by an enemy state. In a desperate bid to save him, people raced out onto the river in boats to search for his body. After failing to find him, the people threw rice dumplings into the river to distract the fish from feeding on his corpse.

With that story in mind, here are some of the most glorious ba zhang (rice dumplings) pictures we found on Instagram. Click on the pictures to go to Instagram and enjoy them in their full glory:

. #Throwback to yesterday's Nonya Bak Zhang breakfast! Easily finishing three of those in a sitting, cause it's simply delicious! Though not comparable to those big brands like Joo Chiat, nor is it fanciful and unique like many hotels, it's still enough to make me salivate just thinking about it. . Will update the stall name once I'm free, so that you all may check it out and share your verdict with me! ? . #BemusedEats #SGEats #SGBreakfast #BaZhang #BakZhang #LoveToEat #LiveToEat #IGFood #FoodPorn #Food #FoodSG

<The Duanwu Festival> also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is a traditional holiday originating in China, occurring near the summer solstice. It is also known as Zhongxiao Festival commemorating fealty and filial piety. The festival now occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional Chinese calendar, which is the source of the festival's alternative name, the Double Fifth Festival. The Chinese calendar is lunisolar, so the date of the festival varies from year to year on the Gregorian calendar. The story best known in modern China holds that the festival commemorates the death of the poet and minister Qu Yuan of the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period of the Zhou Dynasty. A cadet member of the Chu royal house, Qu served in high offices. However, when the king decided to ally with the increasingly powerful state of Qin, Qu was banished for opposing the alliance and even accused of treason. During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of poetry. Twenty-eight years later, Qin captured Ying, the Chu capital. In despair, Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River. It is said that the local people, who admired him, raced out in their boats to save him, or at least retrieve his body. This is said to have been the origin of dragon boat races. When his body could not be found, they dropped balls of sticky rice into the river so that the fish would eat them instead of Qu Yuan's body. This is said to be the origin of zongzi.

Happy Duan Wu Jie 端午节 to everyone! Made a huge version of rice dumplings- Lotus Leaf Chicken glutinous rice instead of Bah Zhang as my mom IS the subject matter expert for Bah Zhangs. Definitely won't be throwing this tasty delicacy into the river for fishes ( a tradition in Duan Wu festival as that is said to keep the fishes away from feasting on Qu Yuan's body). A big dumpling in lotus leaf form, my dad enjoyed it very much. Healthier version as I used a mixture of glutinous rice, unpolished rice and barley. #foodphotography #singaporehomecooks #singapore #foodporn #foodgasm #foodoftheday #lotusleafrice #giantdumpling #duanwujie #端午节 #荷叶饭 #糯米鸡 #lomaikai #cookingwithlove #homecookedwithlove #glutinousrice #dumplings #malaysiafoodie #chinesedelicacy #tasteoftradition #singaporefoodie

These gorgeous dumplings are probably too gorgeous to be thrown into the river though.
