10 secretly very nice hawker foods in S'pore with unique selling points

Eat food, not hype.

One thing Singaporeans can agree on is that hawker food is affordable.

The fact that it doesn't burn a hole in your pocket makes the familiar taste of hawker fare even better.

Some hawker stalls need no introduction as they have been raved about since pre-Facebook days.

So, here are 10 hawker stalls that are secretly very nice because not everyone knows about them and you don't have to wait 5ever in the queue to eat them.

1. Ah Tai Hainanese Chicken Rice

Word on the street is that the owner of Ah Tai Hainanese Chicken Rice used to work as a chef for the famous Tian Tian Chicken Rice. Although not as popular as Tian Tian, Ah Tai serves up an unbeatable rendition of the dish -- sans the queue.

Let's just take a moment to look at this plate of succulent chicken meat nestled on a bed of perfectly cooked rice.

2. Chai Chee Pork Porridge

Many know the Bedok 85 market for its soup-based Bak Chor Mee, but not many know of a stall named Chai Chee Pork Porridge. Don't let its name fool you though.

Serving more than just pork porridge, it offers a wide variety of congees with different toppings like Century Egg and Cuttlefish -- all cooked with the same comforting base.

3. Simon Road Hokkien Mee Relocated at Blk 210 Hougang Street 21

Also known as Hokkien Mee with two types of chili:

Simon Road Hokkien Mee • SINGAPORE | My first ever Hokkien Mee and the one i grew up eating. Definitely not taking the privilege of reliving this familiar flavor and wok hei for granted. Relocated but business remains brisk ?? #latergram #friedhokkienmee #simonroadhokkienmee #elainesloveforhokkienmee #hawkerfood #sgeats #danielaineats

4. Saffron’s Cafeteria

Pratas are typically eaten with curry, and sometimes for the occasional oddball, sugar. Heh.

But this 24-hour Indian Halal coffeeshop spoils their patrons with an additional condiment that takes prata-eating to a whole new level — sambal chili sauce — and trust us, it’s a level you’d want to be on.

Typical coffee shop food suitable for all meals is much more satisfying than slightly luxurious ones. What's more is its sambal recommended by my friends ?

5. Lao Zhong Zhong Fine Spice Stall

Most Ngoh Hiangs in Singapore cannot compare to the one at Lao Zhong Zhong Fine Spice Stall. Known for its crispy prawn fritters and fried beancurd, the food items possess a distinct taste that set them apart from the others, especially when paired with the chili sauce.

I must say the chilli is really gd!! #wuxiang #hawkerfood #lunch #valueformoney #cheapandgoodfood #sgfood #igfoodie #igfood #ilovesg #yummy

6. Fu Yuan Minced Pork Noodle

Hidden in a coffeeshop in Tampines, this unassuming bowl of Bak Chor Mee comes with al dente noodles coated in an intense vinegary sauce.

Its fried fish and lard toppings also give the dish an added crunch. It's okay, food this good is worth all the fats.

7. Amirah & Nur Aniqah Mee Soto & Mee Rebus

Instead of noodles, you can opt for rice to go with the tangy Soto Ayam at this hawker stall. The ketupat rice offers an overall cleaner taste to the soup, and absorbs all the flavour of the broth like little sponges.

8. Ann Chin Homemade Popiah

It's not always that you get Popiahs with the right skin to filling ratio. But over at Ann Chin, they do it just right. The grated radish is packed nicely into a thin layer of Popiah skin, which magically holds everything in place without breaking apart.

Location: There's seven outlets islandwide but here's a less known one -- 24 Sin Ming Road, 570024

9. Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim Mee Pok-The Art Of Mee Pok

Yes, that's the name of the stall. And they certainly deserve that title.

Fishballs sometimes run the risk of tasting like rolled flour balls, but the ones here taste like real fish paste. The prawns served with its fishball noodles are also different from the usual ones -- the fat, translucent type that you'd normally avoid in supermarkets for being expensive.

10. Han Jia Bak Kut Teh Pork Leg

The next time you go cycling at East Coast Park, be sure to offset all the calories you burned by indulging in a bowl of peppery bak kut teh at East Coast Village Food Lagoon.

And while you’re at it, do order the other must-have item from the same stall -- tender pork knuckles soaked in an addictive marinade of dark soy sauce and a truckload of spices. You're welcome.
