Gone are the days when people would pop into the 7-Eleven just to get sweets or tidbits.
With the convenience stores now offering a wide variety of ready-to-eat meals as well as new flavours of the popular Chun Cui He milk tea, it has slowly re-branded itself as a destination for proper food.
Enter the two localised versions of Onigiri - Nasi Lemak and Sambal Chili Shrimp.
The Onigiri is a rice-based snack from Japan that's traditionally packed with fillings like dried plum or salmon.
Perhaps deciding that the original flavours aren't doing enough to capture the Singaporean market, 7-Eleven took matters into their own hands by producing local renditions of the Japanese dish.
Since its launch, the new offerings have been met with mixed reviews from the public, with people falling into two extreme ends of the spectrum.
Love
People who belong in the first camp praised the fusion dish for being well-executed, with some even declaring the new product as their favourite food.
Non-love
However, it has also received its fair share of negative feedback from consumers, like this Facebook user who chastised the Onigiri's soggy texture and costliness.
And some who even labeled the Onigiris as blasphemous creations.
Both the Nasi Lemak and Sambal Shrimp Onigiri(s) are available in 7-Eleven stores for $2.50 each.
Other hybrid foods
Hybrid foods are certainly seeing a rise in Singaporean supermarkets and eateries.
Recently, liquid versions of popular chocolate bars have made their way to Mustafa Centre, causing a hoo-ha in the local food community.

In the cafe scene, we have nostalgic food combinations like pandan waffles topped with Horlicks ice cream.
Foodies in Singapore are going to have a field day trying out all these old food options in new combinations.
