On the morning of Wednesday, April 19, a group of four Singapore Sports School bowlers were on their way to the Temasek Club for a tournament.

The bus they were in was just 200m away from the entrance of the club when it came to a halt in front of a huge obstacle — a tree had fallen across Rifle Range Road, causing an impasse for both human and vehicular traffic.

As recounted by a volunteer mom in a Facebook post on the Sports School's page, several aunties and uncles stalled by the fallen tree were also standing in front of it, talking among themselves.

After alighting to assess the situation, one of the four students, Jarred Lim, suggested breaking through the smaller branches to form an opening to pass through.

Someone else said there might be ants, though, and a policeman who had arrived at the scene said NParks had been called in and was on their way.

With half an hour to go before being disqualified for not showing up at the bowling alley by 8am, Lim and three friends — Aidan Poh, Oh Han Qin and James Lowe — decided to take matters into their own hands.

The four teenagers, aged between 17 and 19 years old, bashed through the branches to open up a hole for the others to pass through to the other side.

This resulted in the following scenes:

"Luckily, we went to OBS (Outward Bound School) and learned a thing or two," said Lowe.

A spokesperson for the Sports School told Mothership.sg that the boys were thanked by one of the members of the public who were helped through.

A good deed done.

And to top off their day, the bowling pair of Poh and Lim clinched the gold medal in the National Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship for the "A" Division Boys' Doubles.

Their counterparts, Oh and Lowe, came in sixth behind three pairs of ACJC and one pair of ACS(I) bowlers, but hey, still a respectable showing for the dramatic morning they had.

Nicely done, folks.
