Karthy Nair, the sister of the late second president of Singapore, Devan Nair, has passed away at the age of 90 in the United Kingdom (UK).

The Guardian published an obituary penned by her son, Dhevdhas Nair, on Apr. 4.

He said that his mother was a founding member of the People's Action Party (PAP), who was "fiercely critical" of Lee Kuan Yew.

She left Singapore to settle in the UK in 1956, while her brother, Devan Nair, remained in the country.

While living in the UK, Karthy Nair worked as a teacher, and hung out with the artistic crowd, such as writers, artists and musicians. She also became an activist over there joining groups like Liberty, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Peace Pledge Union.

One of nine children, and descended from royal Malayalee families of Kerala, India, Nair was born in Malacca, before her family moved to Singapore. During the Japanese invasion of Singapore, her family took refuge at a rubber estate managed by her father in Malaya.

She is survived by an adopted son, Sagar Nair, and Dhevdhas.
