Earth Hour brings out the dark side of S'pore for a good cause. Here's how it was observed.

Lights out.

What were you up to on the weekend?

Some of you might have been at home lazing about, but if you were in town on Saturday (Mar. 25), things might have seemed different from your typical weekend night.

That's because from 8:30pm onwards, Singapore was engulfed in partial darkness for an hour, in observance of Earth Hour.

Here's a view of the Marina Bay area:

In case you're thinking that it's not as dark as you thought it might be, it is necessary to keep some lights, such as street lights, on because safety.

Nevertheless, the difference is still pretty obvious, given that we're used to seeing Singapore's night scene decorated by bright city lights.

Here's a side by side comparison:

Participants of the Sundown Marathon and the WWF Earth Hour Run also took to the streets at that time, but the darkness didn't dampen their mood.

In fact, some of them threw on animal costumes for the occasion.

Other places too had their own way of observing the event. Some residents brought out sparklers to light the occasion:

Parties were not dampened by Earth Hour. Some watering holes turned off the lights, and brought out their drink-filled light bulbs that glow in the dark.

To continue the playing party music, some places hooked up their DJ consoles to electricity generated by people pedalling bicycles.

Well, we don't know how effective Earth Hour truly is, but hey, it's nice to see our brightly-lit city in a different light, or lack thereof, for that matter.
