Every young single Singaporean growing up will know February 14 as a day of loss and much mourning.

But what about Feb. 15?

Feb. 15 has taken on a new significance over the years because it was "a date which will live in infamy" (cue Pearl Harbour song) for our parents and grandparents.

On February 15, 1942, the British formally surrendered Singapore and our parents and grandparents suffered under the Japanese Occupation for the next three and a half years.

On February 15 every year, the sirens will sound in Singapore to remind Singaporeans that it is Total Defence Day and every Singaporeans have a part to play.

Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence, decided to show his love on Valentine's Day by sharing his Total Defence Day Message for 2017:

So let's remember that on a day after Valentine's Day, all Singaporeans will continue to keep "Singapore safe, secure and sovereign for the next generation".
