Bears attack car with open window in China zoo

Heeding warnings shouldn't be so difficult.

Beijing Badaling Wildlife Park was the scene of a gruesome incident last July, where a woman who had stepped out of her vehicle inside the park's tiger enclosure ended up being dragged away by a tiger.

She survived the mauling despite sustaining serious injuries. However, an elderly lady believed to be her mother was tragically killed while attempting to rescue her.

Last Sunday, Feb. 26, it became the scene of another close call, this time with a different animal.

Bears were seen gathering aggressively around a white car that had stopped, as it entered the black bear enclosure at the safari-style park, and at one point, attempted to claw its way inside the car.

A Weibo user in the vehicle behind the white car filmed the whole incident.

She claimed that her husband who had perfect eyesight could see that the back window of the white car had been rolled down slightly, leaving a small opening to feed the bears.

She speculated that the child at the backseat could possibly have been intimidated by the bears, and hence accidentally rolled down the window, which gave the bears an opportunity to attack the car.

The incident was finally resolved when park rangers arrived to disperse the bears and direct the car out of danger.

Prominent warning signs were mounted at the gate of the bear enclosure to visitors not to get out of their cars and to close their windows and lock their doors. But it seems China visitors to the zoo are quite nonchalant about such dangers, and it may take more incidents like this to raise public awareness.
