Westgate Mall gives Ang Pau rate card according to income levels, gets absolutely destroyed in comments

Not the best decision.

Westgate Mall is a (and this is quite self-explanatory) mall.

You shop, or more likely, enjoy the air-con, and perhaps grab a bite to eat.

It is also apparently a dank meme-making machine.

On January 21, Westgate Mall's Facebook page uploaded this rate card for how much Ang Pau money to give to your relatives and friends.

A slight tweak they made on more generic infographics on Ang Pau rates, was to split the post into 3 tiers.

Low income, mid income, and high income.

Their rates were supposedly inspired by a post on Mustsharenews, a website that produces news you must share for some reason.

Now, if you're thinking, "Wow, that is possibly the dumbest way to interpret a simple token from the heart".

Westgate could really have used you in their social media team.

Backlash

The backlash was swift and deadly.

Some took a step back and tried to show what Chinese New Year is truly about.

Others used actual history to rebuke the mall.

And others just straight up called Westgate out on their faux pas.

Westgate's response

Before the incredible backlash, Westgate seemed to actively double down on the idea that you could attach a tangible rate to something that should be from the heart.

But, when the negative comments started streaming in, they finally issued this statement.

The readers though, were having none of it.

The only thing more hypocritical would be if a shopping mall promoted capitalism, pretended to be hip and trendy, and then ended everything by claiming money isn't really important after all.

Like something that silly will happen.
