Have you ever encountered cyclists on the road, and felt an unexplainable lack of respect for these spandex wearing freeloaders?
If you do, this ST forum letter is for you.
In response to an article written on Jan. 15 discussing the issue of respect for cyclists, a forum writer, Felix Heng Teck Seng, wrote a blistering letter to The Straits Times.
For most of the letter, he touched on the inherent privilege of cyclists.
Currently, cyclists have special treatment on the road.
They do not need to wear helmets, pass the Highway Code, or pay registration and road tax.
Not only is there a need to get cyclists to register and pay to use the road, but also, more importantly, they should be made to learn the Highway Code and pass tests before they are allowed on the road.
However, after a whole letter condemning cyclists for their privilege, Felix deftly transitioned to a gentler tone at the end of the article.
It is time to deal with this hot potato issue before more cyclists get killed.

Response to the letter was lukewarm at best.
Some called out the complex issue of tax.
Others questioned whether taxes were the solution to everything.
Even those who agreed with the general points of the letter, found glaring loopholes in it.

But perhaps the greatest response came from this ST commenter.
Currently, pedestrians have special treatment on the road. Yet, they want the same respect as other road users.
Not only is there a need to get pedestrians to register and pay to use the road, but also, more importantly, they should be made to learn the Highway Code and pass tests before they are allowed on the road.
It is time to deal with this hot potato issue before more pedestrians get killed.
