The Singapore police has urged the public not to spread unsubstantiated warnings that have been circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook, which may cause public alarm.

The police said on Tuesday, Dec. 6, that they are aware of a text message warning of potential terrorist attacks in December in popular areas such as Orchard Road.

The police said:

"Members of the public are reminded to stay vigilant and to report suspicious activities/persons/items to the police. We can all contribute towards SGSecure and help ensure that the safety and security of our friends and loved ones are not compromised."

Warnings of this nature are not unusual as Singapore is in high alert during this festive season.

On Dec. 2, Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam told a forum organised by the Foreign Correspondents Association that the threat of a terror attack in Singapore is higher than it was earlier this year and last year.

When asked what the alert level in Singapore was, on a scale of one to 10, Shanmugam said that from the perspective of the security agencies, it was “pretty high, particularly with the season we're in”.
