If you're a fan of Crazy Rich Asians — that bestseller novel by Singaporean Kevin Kwan about ultra rich Singaporeans behaving badly, you would know by now that the book is being made into a Hollywood production.

Now, casting calls have been opened for the leading and supporting roles, and they're looking for Asians:

The casting notice by Terri Taylor Casting calls for actors for three roles — one American Chinese and two Singaporean Chinese.

Interestingly, the Singaporean characters wanted are required to speak English with "barely a trace of an accent".

Not quite sure what that means, though, in the context of Singlish, which anyone who calls themselves Singaporean should possess a good grasp of.

According to director Jon M. Chu in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, having an all-Asian cast is extremely important, and especially timely for a Hollywood production.

"Now it’s like the audience is demanding [an all-Asian film], and we can prove that there is a community out there [for the film], and they will come see an Asian male can be the lead, an Asian female doesn’t just have to be the sexy vixen or whatever it may be. We can have all walks of life, all shapes and sizes, all ages of Asians, and be entertained."

Amen to that. We are tired of seeing Singaporean talent like Chin Han reduced to bit roles on the world stage. Or get our Singapore skyline into a movie solely for the purpose of blowing it up.

Hopefully a local face makes it into one one the leading roles. Who better to play Singaporeans than actual Singaporeans, or folks who've been here for sufficiently long, right?

We have some ideas in this regard; here's hoping some will make the cut.

But hey, they didn't restrict their call to professional actors only — if you think you have what it takes to play Singapore's top 1 per cent, this could be your chance.
