S'pore lady raising funds for helper after typhoon destroyed her house in the Philippines

Help, Helper, Helpest.

Typhoon Haima was a tropical cyclone that ravaged Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines back in October, 2016.

While it might be approximately a month since the damage was dealt, there are many who are still struggling to pick up the pieces.

One such person is Marisol.

In a post written by Christine Tan, whose family employs Marisol, the typhoon is still doing damage to her life.

Marisol is a helper from the Philippines who has been working in a Singapore household for a while now.

She mainly helps out with the kids.

According to the post, Marisol was due to get married back in her hometown soon.

We were very happy when she told my family of her plan to return to her hometown Sisim, Penablanca Cagayan in the Philippines to get married.

Then the Typhoon happened.

While Tan, and her family didn't think much of the incident at first, a conversation about Marisol's impending marriage laid bare the extent of the damage.

It wasn't until I asked her how her marriage preparations were going that she meekly told me it has stopped due to the disaster. She doesn't even know if she can get married now.

Naively, I asked her "is it bad?" expecting it to be similar to the damage I've seen from a few overseas friends' Snapchat stories.

A smashed window here and there, some minor flooding, perhaps. I was very wrong. Feel quite stupid ah, now that I think about it. Really goes to show how sheltered I am - there are simply some things I can't fathom.

This was the extent of the damage.

It was this conversation that prompted Tan to set up a fund raising page to help alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by Marisol.

The repair costs are rather steep.

And, the amount raised so far, isn't anywhere close to what is needed.

But, it shows that people would go to great lengths for family, whatever that definition may be.
