Why study when you can win?

Singaporean swimming star Joseph Schooling is contemplating dropping out of university to turn professional full-time, according to Channel News Asia on Nov. 24.

The 21-year-old is only 16 months away from completing his bachelors’ degree at the University of Texas where he is currently studying economics.

Quitting school now for Schooling would mean giving up on his collegiate sporting career where he has been nurtured to become one of the best in the world and an overnight household name after his impressive Olympic Gold medal win.

However, 16 months is a long time for any athlete who is peaking now and at the height of one's prowess to be redistributing resources to going for classes and passing exams, when he can just focus on being a dolphin.

Schooling, who is heading back to Austin on Friday, Nov. 25, said:

“I don’t know, there’s a lot of things going on."

“Swimming has such a short life span, you’ve got to make use of your opportunities while you can. A year and a half is a lot of time, but we’ll see. I’ve really got to go back, sit down, think hard about it. It’s a huge decision. For right now, I’m still focusing on school.”

The swimmer's mother, though, wants her son to stay the course and not drop out.
