MSN messenger was a significant part of the 90s kid's Secondary school and Junior College years.

However, MSN, like SMS, seems so outdated when it is compared to the wide variety of social media and messaging platforms on offer now.

Anyway, here are 10 practical MSN skills we may have forgotten while MSN messenger lives on in our hearts  ~forever~ <3 <3 <3

1. Being "present": Excitedly signing on after school, hoping your crush talks to you

If it fails...

2. Flirting subtly without swiping left or right: Signing in and out repeatedly to get the attention of your crush*

But never initiating a conversation because you were too scared to.

*Has never actually been proven to work, but people do it nonetheless.

3. Knowing how to stalk someone discreetly: Pretending to be offline so you can monitor your friend list without having to talk to anyone

If there were hashtags back then it'd be #CSI101

4. Marketing yourself: Syncing your status to your iTunes'/Windows Media Player "now listening" and listening to a cool song on purpose

Because pretentiousness starts young.

5. Marketing yourself part 2: Or putting song lyrics as your status instead

Nothing like mass-targeted pop culture to express the angst and pinings of your innermost self.

6. Knowing when to call attention to yourself: WINKS

And losing your cool self for a moment when you receive one with your computer at max volume.

7. Building a consistent brand image: Customising your font type/colour and "choping" it.

Then having a serious conversation with your friend why you have to have that colour and font.

8. Practising the art of individualism online: Putting a long ass name and liberally peppering it with emoticons

Plus: a display picture of whichever celebrity you were crushing on.

9. Honing the fine craft of conversation: Talking nonsense to Smarter Child

And getting bored after five minutes, because he doesn't respond to your insults.

10. Getting friend's attention before the FB poke era: Nudging your friends incessantly when they don't reply

Or just to annoy them.
