This year, LTA dresses up MRT stations and a NEL train for Deepavali

Glad to see Little India and the NEL are celebrating.

Most of you might not have realised, but Deepavali is coming up next on our national calendar, and this year it falls on Oct. 29, two days before Halloween.

Happily, the folks at the Land Transport Authority (LTA) commissioned a Deepavali-themed train on October 15.

If you take the North East Line, you'll have a chance to ride that train through mid-November.

The train's interior decorations are inspired by elements of Rangoli (patterns made from brightly-coloured rice, flour or flower petals) designs and elegant garlands.

The designs include peacocks, which are symbols of luck and prosperity, and lotuses, which represent life and purity.

Check out the two train stations at Little India too, which sit on the Downtown Line and North East Line:

To make this happen, the LTA collaborated with the LISHA (Little India Shopkeepers and Heritage Association).

And it looks like people like it:

There don't seem to be any plans to expand the decorations to other train stations, though, which is a bit of a shame.

We don't know about you, but we'd sure like Hindu and Sikh Singaporeans to know that the whole of Singapore celebrates Diwali with them, not just Little India.

Surely Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan, who launched the themed train, would agree:

(Editor's note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated the date Deepavali is celebrated in Singapore as Oct 30. It will be celebrated on Oct 29, and the article has been updated accordingly.)
