This is why S'pore govt will resort to fines, clampdown on personal mobility device use

If you want to die, please don't implicate a fellow road user.

A person who clearly has a death wish was caught on video riding a personal mobility device (PMD) along Upper Aljunied Road on Oct. 14, at about 1pm, according to the time stamp on the footage.

The said road user who couldn't care less was:

- Hogging the right lane on a two-lane road.

- Obstructing legit road tax-paying commuters.

- Riding in the blind spot of a public bus.

- Exceeding 25km/h.

- Overtaking regular vehicles without signalling.

Here is the video:

Reckless use of PMDs is increasingly a problem.

Several Members of Parliament quizzed the Ministry of Transport (MOT) on Oct. 11 about the problem Singaporeans are facing with the increasing number of accidents involving pedestrians and e-bike/ scooter riders.

The most prominent incident involved a 53-year-old woman being severely hurt by a 17-year-old driving an e-bike.

In response, Josephine Teo, Senior Minister of State for Transport indicated in Parliament that PMDs are here to stay.

Instead of getting rid of PMDs entirely because of a handful of errant users, she said that “new rules and enforcement and education efforts will help to build a culture of responsible and safe sharing of space.”

But it looks like some irresponsible users are not only tempting fate and real vehicle users, but also egging the authorities to take more drastic measures to the detriment of the other responsible users.
