Gudetama Cafe opening end-November at Suntec City is proof S'poreans living in post-consumption phase

Where everything has become ornamental -- and unnecessarily edible.

The first Gudetama Cafe will be opening at Suntec City by end-November 2016.

And Singaporeans are excited. Excited about the fact that the food they are going to order would sit better on social media than in their mouths.

Excited about the possibility that they can eat Gudetama in real life, when he is nothing but a listless, apathetic egg cartoon character from Japan created by Sanrio that they felt an affinity with, who is emblematic of our times of excess ennui.

Excited about the types of dishes the cafe will serve, which includes egg toast, waffle with soft serve ice cream, pizza and coffee -- a variety of grub that is available everywhere else and has precious little to do with Gudetama, the same way Pokemon had precious little to do with food.

But not as if that was going to be a problem.

People used to work to earn money to buy food. Nowadays, people work -- or don't, if you're a millennial who spends your parents' money -- to spend money to buy a chance to take photos of their food.

This is a hallmark of any society that has truly made it. It is where things can afford people, rather than vice versa.

The old adage used to be that regular people buy things and rich people buy time.

In a post-consumption society, everybody buys things that are not even real that they don't even need.

This is a stage where functional is overrated.

Gudetama is most famous for pulling his strip of bacon as a blanket to his chin and mumbling, “Five more minutes..."

He is just dying to rest. Or rather, resting to die.

Like the cafe and late-capitalism, completely unnecessary, but totally needed.
