Bangladesh national tries to escape S'pore by swimming along water pipeline at Causeway

No escape.

It's rather commonplace to see arrests made for foreigners who try to enter Singapore illegally, or overstay in Singapore.

But, on October 25, 2016, a 30 year old Bangladesh national was caught trying to swim towards the water pipeline alongside the Causeway.

Here is the joint press release by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Singapore Police Force (SPF).

On 25 October 2016 at about 11.20pm, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers at Woodlands Checkpoint were informed that a man was sighted swimming towards the water pipeline alongside the Causeway.

ICA and Police Coast Guard (PCG) officers were immediately deployed to search for the man. The 30-year-old male Bangladesh national was successfully located underneath the water pipeline and arrested.

The police arrested 2 other Bangladesh nationals for attempting to help the man escape Singapore.

The penalties for overstaying or illegal entry are a jail term of up to sixth months, and 3 strokes minimum of the cane.

The penalties for abetting a person to leave Singapore illegally is a jail term of not less than six months and not more than two years and shall also be liable to a fine not exceeding $6,000.
