Singaporeans woke up on Sept. 28 to news that a 39-year-old man had locked himself in a flat in Block 462 Sembawang Drive with a two-year-old child since around 6.40pm on Tuesday (Sept. 27).

After 17 hours, at around 12pm today, police broke into the flat and arrested the man. Check out the video of the police car driving away with the man by Channel NewsAsia super reporter Leong Wai Kit who has been on the ground since 2am.

In earlier updates, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said, "the man had locked himself in the house with the boy following a dispute with the boy’s family members. Officers from Ang Mo Kio Division, Crisis Negotiation Unit and Special Operations Command are managing the incident." SPF provided several updates throughout the incident which said they were negotiating with the man and advised members of the public to stay away.

SPF, in its Facebook updates, did not use the word "hostage", calling the incident the "INCIDENT AT SEMBAWANG DR" instead. Channel NewsAsia called it a "standoff".

Member of Parliament for the area Dr Lim Wee Kiak was also at the scene. He told reporters that the two-year-old boy was the youngest of four siblings and that there was food and water in the flat throughout the incident.
