Joseph Schooling's gold medal, and new Olympic record yesterday elicited scenes of absolute joy among Singaporeans.
The disbelief, historic importance and well earned platitudes have rightfully been covered round the clock yesterday, so let's take a look at the lighter side of what the record breaking swimming meant to Singapore, and the world.
National Service
A topic quickly brought up was Schooling's impending National Service, when his deferment ends at the end of this month.
And when some people tried to discourage deferment.
The rebuttal was swift and efficient.
Some even volunteered to swallow the 2 year commitment for Singapore's golden boy. Because potential Jellyfish.
The pride of hearing our national anthem could have gone so, so wrong.
The world reacts
The jokes weren't just offered by Singaporeans alone. The now famous picture of a young Schooling posing with Michael Phelps made it all the way to the front page of Reddit.
Which lead to some what ifs from Reddit.
Get ready for an influx of swimmers coming to Singapore soon.
And just like in swimming, it turns out international standards of humour isn't that far away from our own sense of humour.
But the funniest zinger came from Singaporean Facebook user, Joie Chee.
It's funny because it's true.
