He's also getting rid of the shares he holds in The Independent Singapore's parent company.

Guess this was an eventuality: Workers' Party star member Leon Perera has stepped down from the board of socio-political website The Independent Singapore.

Perera, who is a central executive council member, non-constituency MP for East Coast GRC and in general an over-qualified smart guy, announced on Wednesday afternoon his decision, "with immediate effect".

He will also be ridding himself of the shares he holds in The Independent Singapore's parent company, Protegesoft — this should be completed within the coming month, he said:

Perera's announcement comes on the back of his appointment as Deputy Chair of the lead opposition party's media team — which could therefore create perceived conflict of interest — as well as, possibly, the ongoing police investigation into The Independent Singapore's allegedly errant posting of Bukit Batok election-related content to its website and Facebook page on Cooling-Off and Polling days in early May.

He also added the following:

"I was not involved in the operation or management of TISG. However, I have decided to take this additional step to ensure that any perceived link to TISG does not distract public attention when policy positions are taken by the Workers' Party, particularly on issues related to media regulation."
