S'porean hiking 4,280km to raise funds for children with cancer

He lost his aunt to cancer previously.

Prasatt Arumugam is 25 years old. And he might be a little crazy.

This July, the Singaporean will walk the entire Pacific Crest Trail.

In other words, a total distance equivalent to that of Singapore to China and an elevation about 16 times of Mount Everest -- all to raise awareness and funds for the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF), a cause he holds dear after his aunt passed from cancer.

The entire journey will take five months. He hopes the physical challenges on the trail will offer a tangible parallel to the struggles of cancer warriors.

To prepare, he spends at least one day each week climbing high buildings in Singapore, including the 53-storey apartment buildings at Pinnacle@Duxton, with a 15kg backpack.

No easy feat

One day, I attempted to train with him -- but alas, only managed 26 floors carrying his backpack.

Even though I completed the entire building twice over in the end with my own much lighter bag, while climbing, I was struck with the realisation that I might never have the conviction or capability to do what Prasatt will attempt.

So you might have your reservations about his initiative or you might choose to help in other ways. But make no mistake, this campaign is, at its core, about being the change you want to see in the world.

Yes, Prasatt might be idealistic, maybe even a little crazy. But as Alice from Alice in Wonderland tells the Mad Hatter, “All the best people are.”
