Buzzfeed Canada denies Singapore's independence, rejects Lee Kuan Yew's hard work

Dare you awaken the (Mer)lion, Buzzfeed Canada?

Buzzfeed, one of the most popular websites in the world, with over 250 million readers a month, has made a shocking swipe at Singaporean sovereignty.

In an article titled "People Keep Sharing This Viral Hoax About A Man’s Family Watching Him Lose His Virginity", it made the following claim:

"... Malaysian site Mothership.sg..."

It is true that we debunked that particular hoax. But as most of our loyal readers, or anyone who understands how website domain abbreviations work, can attest, Mothership.SG is a Singaporean site, not a Malaysian one.

A simple click of our site's "About" tab yields this, too:

Could this be a simple mistake?

Very unlikely, for 2 main reasons.

1. The writer is the founding editor for Buzzfeed Canada.

This is no ordinary intern, or writer, or even editor, for that matter — the article's author, Craig Silverman, is no less than one of the top dogs at Buzzfeed's Canada office:

He is of such import, that he has even earned a fancy blue tick on his Twitter account:

Men of such calibre do not simply make editorial mistakes such as this.

2. The article he wrote is about media misrepresenting the truth.

The article touches on how media sometimes falls prey to untruths. To make a mistake about an entire nation's identity in an article about mistakes in the media cannot possibly be mere carelessness, it must point to something more.

This leads us to the only logical conclusion: Buzzfeed is indirectly denying our independence from Malaysia, which we obtained on August 9, 1965.

In Buzzfeed's worldview, maybe Singapore isn't even an autonomous nation — merely a subset of Malaysia, no different from Johor, Kelantan, Sabah or Sarawak.

Which effectively negates the hard work of our founding fathers, Lee Kuan Yew, our pioneers and anyone who has shed blood, sweat and tears to build up this great nation.

This is not just a case of typos, it is a question of Singapore's existence, sovereignty, and most importantly, resolve.

So in our greatest challenge yet, will we stand tall in the face of adversity, or fall to the might of American imperia-listicle-ism?

Only we can decide our fate...

Also, thanks Buzzfeed for the shout-out, really appreciate it.
