7 things every Singaporean wants to do but finds it slightly paiseh to execute

Because face matters.

I'm sure you have been a situation where you really want to do something, but just feel too shy or thin-skinned to be the first to make a move.

It happens to all of us.

Be comforted that you're not alone in this and see how many of these you can identify with:

1. Be the first to start eating at a formal meal

You know how it is when you gather for a meal, especially with colleagues or superiors, and everybody's talking or some intense discussion ensues.

You're sitting there and thinking 'Come on people, if we were here to discuss the fate of humanity I can understand the need for talk. But hello, food is there, staring at me, getting cold and undelicious.'

2. Be the first to leave the office

like a boss

See how the gif says 'Like a Boss'?

Perhaps that's why you are not the first to get up to leave work - you're not the boss.

But let's stop this unhealthy culture of seeing who blinks first every day at 6.30pm. If you've done your work for the day just leave.

3. Asking your friend how much they're giving in red packet for a wedding

Actually, what is more awkward is being on the receiving end of such a question. Especially if you were planning to give a derisory amount.

4. Getting in/out of the lift when riding with an acquaintaince/neighbour

There's always this weird tango you do with that acquaintance getting in/out of the lift.

You try to usher him in, but he does the same thing to you.

"After you!"

"No, you first. It's ok one."

"No, no."

Then you all start moving into the lift at the same time.

Smooth.

5. Calling out the boss for a stupid suggestion

Well that's how companies fail - when bosses love to come up with bad ideas and no one likes to rain on his parade.

Do you want to make your boss feel stupid or do you want to have a stress-free weekend?

6. Give up seat to a lady who looks pregnant

Do you want to risk hurting this person's feelings?

That's why many Singaporeans prefer to stand on the MRT.

7. Eating the last piece of food on a shared dish

barney-mine

You know you want to take the last piece of juicy chicken for yourself.

You reach towards the chicken with trepidation in your heart, suddenly you're afraid of appearing like a glutton.

So you do what cowards do - you cut the chicken in half and let someone else be the 'last picker'.

You're disgusting.
