Cyclist hit-&-run along Changi Coast Road caught on camera shows everyone should just be considerate

If not, you die, I die, everybody die.

A hit-and-run incident involving a group of cyclists and a Hyundai driver that was caught on camera is now the subject of a heated discussion over whether cyclists should be on the road.

The incident, according to the man who recorded it, happened in July this year. The cyclist, who gave his name as Stuart Baker, related the story in a post on a niche interest site called Cycliq published on Thursday.

In the post, Baker said he, his wife and a friend were cycling along a stretch that looks like it could be Changi Coast Road on a Saturday morning.

He said the driver of a Hyundai then deliberately made a swerve towards the group before speeding up.

The car then halted in front of them, he continued, by jamming on the brakes. This caught the cyclists by surprise.

From the video, Baker can be seen being able to avoid the car, but his wife hit the vehicle and fell over on her side with the bicycle, causing her to suffer some bruising.

The driver then took off.

Baker said the group waited for an hour for the police to arrive.

Later in the post, he said they received a letter from the police four months later, saying the driver had been convicted of three offences — inconsiderate driving, failing to stop and failing to make an accident report within 24 hours.

However, this incident has highlighted the highly divisive issue of cyclists on roads in various discussion boards.

Many commenters felt that the car driver was at fault for being aggressive as the cyclists still had right of way, albeit not being too considerate.

Just as many, however, felt that the cyclists were at fault for lane-hogging and not utilising the park connectors available where they would surely have right of way.
