9 trends that ruled a S'porean Millennial's 2015

Goodbye, froyo. Hello, youtiao.

Fickle-minded and easily bored, trends that Millennials follow come and go faster than you can say "Happy New Year!"

So, as 2015 comes to an end, let's revisit nine of them that took over our lives this year.

1. Uber

uber driver

You know something is really popular when it becomes a verb: nowadays, nobody cabs because they uber.

The popularity of Uber lies in the convenience it brings because getting a car is as easy as opening the app and keying in your destination. You don't even have to worry about asking the driver, "Uncle, accept card not?" because the fares are charged directly to the credit card you registered with.

By taking away the standing-under-the-hot-sun-to-flag-for-cab experience and the annoying on-hold music as you wait for the customer service officer to either tell you that she has successfully booked a cab or, simply, hang up (which, is often the case), many people are now more willing to uber than to cab.

2. One-punch man

Memes of one of manga's newest hero who can defeat everyone with a single punch (hence, the name) has been flooding our Facebook newsfeed for the past few months.

The most popular one is his exercise regime. I swear, if I hear another one of my sergeant suggesting we do 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups and 10km run every single day, I am going to point my SAR 21 at him. #joking #7monthsuntilORD

3. Tinder

Try Tinder

It is human nature to want to be loved, so by 2015, the usage of the dating app, Tinder, spread like wildfire (tinder is also dry, flammable material. Geddit? hurhurhur) amongst Millennials.

The app is especially prevalent amongst NSFs who only have their phones as company and nothing helps time passes faster than sifting through a list of potential girlfriends.

That is why whenever I look through the phones of my army mates, chances are, I will find Tinder (hidden in the second page of an inconspicuous folder on their home page).

Does it work? I don't think so because till date, out of so many of my friends that use it, I've only heard two or three who met their significant other on Tinder. As for the rest of us, we only end up even lonelier than the pre-Tinder days.

4. Carousell

Buying and selling of second-hand goods have gained a new life thanks to Carousell. On it, you can mostly find people selling their used pre-loved clothes, accessories, books and crafts.

Well, the keyword is mostly because some people sell the weirdest things.

Exhibit B: Six Pack Ice Age Gel

Side effect includes disappointment. Weird AF indeed.

5. llaollao

llaollao

Singaporeans love the latest food craze (but only for a nanosecond).

2015 was the peak but also the death of llaollao as we have moved on to obsessing over bingsus (the less tasty version of our ice kachangs from Korea) and churros (basically, ang moh youtiaos).

Gone were the days of an hour-long queue at 313@Somerset for the Spanish froyo as it joins the ranks of food we once craved for daily but will not bother queuing up for if there's more than two people in front of you (ie: donuts, XL chicken cutlets, coffee buns and bubble tea).

6. Complaining about the haze

The haze is nothing new. However, earlier this year, when it made its appearance again, Millennials decided that enough was enough.

Our unhappiness of the haze was at its most acute. Everyday, you see friends sharing the PSI on Facebook with comments like "ridiculous" and "time to do something about it" or Snapchats of how hazy Singapore was.

And on the rare days when the sky finally cleared, Instagram was flooded with pictures of generic blue skies with captions of how we would never take another haze-free day for granted (but, everyone seems to have already forgotten this promise).

However, what was the most insufferable was the chorus of NSFs chanting and hoping that the PSI would hit a record high the next day so that all outdoor activities would be halted.

But life being life, it was hazy but never hazy enough. #suchislife

7. (Hating) Kendama

If there's one thing we absolutely cannot stand this year, it has to be the kendama.

Three questions: What is a kendama? How do you play it? And most importantly, why do kids even want to play it?

Seriously, how did this medieval Japanese toy even become a thing?

Just like how our parents could not understand our obsession over yo-yos, we Millennials will never be able to answer these questions.

8. Dubsmash

The least popular of the four apps listed, there are some who still do not know the awesome-ness of Dubsmash.

Basically, it is an app where users can record a video of them dubbing over a piece of soundbite from movies, shows, music and internet trends.

Actually, it is better if we let our favourite girls from youtiao666, Michelle and Charlotte, show you why Dubsmashing is such a big deal.

??? We hope you babies had a ✨sparkly✨ Christmas ❄️???????

9. Our Times

our times

It seems that every couple of years, we find ourselves obsessing over a high-school Taiwanese movie about unrequited juvenile love.

And, at the centre of the obsession is the male lead; First, it was Kai Ko in You Are the Apple of My Eye and this year we see Darren Wang of Our Times being ogled at and put on pedestals by girls everywhere.

Sadly, the fate of these stars are typical: After the success of said initial movie, they go on to act in one or two much-anticipated projects that promise to be just as good but always end up disappointing. So, by the time their third movie is released, all the once-adoring fan have long moved on to obsessing over another tough-on-the-outside-but-a-hopelessly-romantic-on-the-inside male lead.

What 2015 has taught us is that the trends that Millennials follow are getting increasingly short-lived and intangible, and they mostly have to do with what we can share on social media like the Dubsmash videos and ranting about the haze.

So, it will not be surprising if next year, except for food, all our trends will be found exclusively online.
