What does it mean when a loving couple takes a photo like this?

We investigate.

So this happened earlier today (Sep. 14):

Good'>
afternoon! We will be shouldering a new responsibility! 我们又要肩负新的重任了!

In the photo, we see a man, presumably the woman's husband, with a silly toothless-grin of a new dad, half-hugging his wife from behind and resting his hands on her tummy. The woman, who looks nothing like 44 and obviously a mother of a one-year-old boy – judging from her maternal glow – placing her hands on top of the man's hands.

The union is complete. Sort of.

Said woman wrote "Good afternoon! We will be shouldering a new responsibility!" without going too much into the nitty gritty. Even though it's as ambiguous as it gets, the Facebook post has been shared almost 1,000 times.

We wonder what do the photo, caption and all the posturing mean.

Could it be... No, it's definitely not a new car or a new house. Those don't put a dent on their shoulders. So what's this new responsibility that even the national paper of record cannot be sure of?

There can only be one answer.

Said woman must be pregnant. Congratulations on the new responsibility, you two.
