Impromptu interviews with foreigners here on August 9 reveal what they appreciate most about S'pore

It's not what they say, but how they say it, that will really get to you.

A pair of Singaporeans, Wong Jing Wei and Pang Sern Yong, took to the streets in Little India and around Peninsula Plaza on National Day (August 9) to interview foreigners in Singapore in the midst of the SG50 festivities.

The goal: To hear what they have to say about Singapore, what makes this place tick and also to make them a part of our SG50 celebrations.

The most endearing part: Some of them have clearly acclimatised themselves to Singapore culture and way of life to the extent that they have appropriated the Singlish way of speaking.

Lesson learnt: The expression of appreciation is universal. The ones who say it best do so when they say it in their halting English.

I've also done shoots in construction sites, and traveled to Burma, India and Bangladesh. Unfortunately I've had limited exchanges with the folks who are working here.So on National Day, we decided to reach out to them to hear what they have to say about Singapore, and to share some of their voices. The interviews were conducted as genuinely and organically as possible, even though many of them could not articulate their responses so well. After getting the soundbites, we handed them some candy to make them feel part of our celebration as well.
