5 moments from the unveiling of Bishan-Toa Payoh PAP candidates that got us scratching our heads

Awkward. #GE2015

The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) officially introduced its first group of new candidates for the coming General Election (GE) yesterday morning (Aug 12).

Joining the five-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) are former senior civil servant Chee Hong Tat, real estate corporate chief Chong Kee Hiong and Maybank Executive Vice-President Saktiandi Supaat, who were unveiled at a coffeeshop at Toa Payoh Central.

The three retiring MPs are former Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng, former Mayor Zainudin Nordin, and MP Hri Kumar.

Here are 5 moments from the unveiling of Bishan-Toa Payoh PAP candidates that got us scratching our heads:

1. Bowing to former DPM Wong (and stopping him from standing up).

You know about people dressed in white doing a 90 degree bowing? Choi! Hopefully, Wong is not so pantang (superstitious).

This is the team bowing from another angle. Probably the most awkward way to thank someone.

DPM Wong entered politics in 1984 (same batch as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong) and left the Cabinet in 2011. He has served in parliament for seven terms - thirty one years.

He told the media, “I’ve walked through this long journey, more than three-quarters of my working life...Don’t you think I deserve a rest?”

2. On the venue of the unveiling (Toa Payoh hawker centre), Ng said: "It reflects our message that this is what elections are about. This is as heartland as heartland goes. Toa Payoh is the oldest estate. We wanted to do (this unveiling) in the heartlands to put across the message that elections are about choosing MPs who can take care of your town."

Tell that to the poor reporters/journalists, who probably thought that the message was to remind them that the peak hour commuter squeeze in public transport will not be solved this election cycle.

Imagine PAP inviting all the non-accredited media and websites to the press conference (Editor's note - Mothership.sg was not granted access to the press conference).

Bertha_Henson_TMG The same rule was applied to socio-political site The Middle Ground.

That will remind everyone that Singapore is kinda too crowded for a 6.9 million population target.

3. Chee Hong Tat's shaky hands.

Providing one of the best soundbites yesterday was Chee Hong Tat. Chee, a resident of Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, was the former Second Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Trade and Industry.

The 41-year-old, who is married with four children, spoke in Chinese and added a few Hokkien sentences as a kicker.

But as he spoke, we spotted that his hands were not quite sturdy as the microphone started to waver.

Here's a better look.

Perhaps he was uncomfortable speaking in Hokkien? Maybe he was afraid that someone would dig his old forum letter where he wrote that it would be "stupid" for any Singapore agency to advocate the learning of dialect.

Or maybe it was just the chilly weather?

4. Zainudin Nordin's casual look.

Outgoing MP Zainudin Nordin probably didn't receive the memo because he was rocking the casual look.

Probably the first time we've seen a MP wearing a PAP t-shirt that looks almost like a turtleneck.

Zainudin, who will also be stepping down as the president of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) later this year, told the media that the “time is right” for him to focus on his family.

He will be replaced by Saktiandi Supaat, 41, who is the Executive Vice President and Head of the FX Research team in Global Markets, Global Banking of Maybank.

5. Enter the defending champion: This will be the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC team, consisting of Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, Senior Minister of State for Transport and Finance Josephine Teo, Chee, Chong, and Saktiandi.

Not sure whether this is an Irish dance or the special Bishan-Toa Payoh pose.

But at least it looks like everyone is having fun.
