SDP Chief Chee Soon Juan to stand for GE2015, slams Straits Times and New Paper journalists

Guess Chua Lee Hoong, Irene Ng and Melvin Singh won't be invited to his next birthday party.

Long-suffering opposition veteran Chee Soon Juan declared on Tuesday his plan to personally contest in the upcoming Singapore General Election.

In a blog post on what looks like a new website of his, cheesoonjuan.com, the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) Sec-Gen notes that his last shot at Parliament was in 2001, calling for the neutralisation of the People's Action Party's "tactic of character-assassination and mud-slinging".

We notice that he also used the opportunity to slam some familiar names:

1. Chua Lee Hoong, formerly with The Straits Times; now a senior civil servant

Of course the rants would not have gone very far if not for their sustained amplification by the traditional media. Ms Chua Lee Hoong, former editor of The Straits Times, for example, dutifully echoed Mr Lee's sentiments about my mental state and added her own diagnosis - apparently I am also suffering from "antisocial personality disorder."

2. Irene Ng, Tampines GRC MP and former The New Paper journalist

A Ms Irene Ng from The New Paper had once asked me for an interview to which I obliged. In the write-up, she said that I was as “fishy as the tuna fish” that she had for lunch.

3. And Melvin Singh (who must have the last word), also from The New Paper

The newspaper would not let up even when I was not the candidate. In the last general election, Mr Melvin Singh gave readers the impression in his report 'Is he SDP’s Loose Cannon?' that I had attempted to conduct an illegal march.  If Mr Singh had done even a cursory observation of my actions that night, he would have seen that I had gone into the crowd for the purpose of mingling with the audience, not to conduct any kind of protest.

The only question that remains: Where will he contest?

In the three rounds of elections he stood in — 1992, 1997 and 2001 — he contested in Marine Parade GRC, MacPherson SMC and Jurong GRC respectively.

So far, SDP has indicated its interest in Bukit Batok SMC, while saying it is considering standing in the same places they did in 2011: Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Sembawang GRC, Bukit Panjang and Yuhua SMCs.

SDP's 'A' team achieved its best performance at Holland-Bukit Timah GRC in GE 2011.

Holland-Bukit Timah GRC

Will Chee lead his 'A' team to Holland-Bukit Timah this time?

We'll keep you posted.
