Following the tragic news that the bodies of the remaining missing pupil and teacher from Tanjong Katong Primary School have been identified on June 10, 2015, as announced in a statement by the Ministry of Education, an online fundraising campaign has been started.

The pupil is Navdeep Singh Jaryal s/o Raj Kumar and the teacher is Mohammad Ghazi Bin Mohamed. They were both initially listed as missing until Wednesday's confirmation that they had perished.

The teacher was leading a school field trip up Mount Kinabalu with kids from Tanjong Katong Primary School when a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Sabah.

The fundraiser is called "Remembering Ghazi". Started by the primary school teacher's friends, the money raised will all go towards Ghazi's wife and three young children. His youngest child is just a year old.

The June 5 earthquake that struck Sabah has now claimed the lives of 10 people from Singapore -- seven pupils and two teachers from Tanjong Katong Primary, and the adventure guide who accompanied them.

MOE said that this remaining duo's identities were confirmed through fingerprinting and personal belongings. The fingerprint records were provided by the Singapore Police Force and the confirmation of the identities were made by the authorities in Sabah.

The campaign, which began on June 10, at about 7pm, has managed to raise more than $13,000 within a span of six hours.

Besides the outpouring of goodwill from the public, there has been numerous tributes paid to the teacher, who is remembered as a hockey and football player and who inspired his students to do their best.

More about the campaign:

On 5th of June 2015, an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck Sabah. Unfortunately, it resulted in the deaths of 19 individuals who were climbing Mount Kinabalu at that time. One of whom was Mohammad Ghazi Bin Mohamed, a dear friend of ours and a beloved teacher to many students.

He was leading a school field trip up Mount Kinabalu with kids from Tanjong Katong Primary School. He leaves behind his wife and three young children, with the youngest being just a year old. So on behalf of all his friends and students whom he has touched and inspired over the years as a teacher, footballer and hockey player, we have set up this page to raise funds that we hope will help his family through this tough time.

Ghazi was a respected soccer and hockey player in his younger days, and proceeded to become a teacher who inspired students each and every day. He was known to spend time after school to play football with his students, encouraged many young hockey players who were just picking up the sport and above all, was known to impart important life values to the students under his care. He was a passionate teacher and those who had met Ghazi, had only the utmost respect for him.

We are immensely saddened by his passing, and want to do all we can to help his family in any possible way. 100% of the funds raised here will go directly to his family so we'd appreciate all the support you can give.

In a school publication addressing his students, Ghazi wrote, "Leave no one behind. Never turn the the blind eye."

We are in touch with a family friend and will keep you all posted once the money is transferred. If you have any questions or need further info, you can reach us at: [email protected].
