An online fundraising campaign has been started for a baby named Yujia, who is suffering from a rare birth defect known as Esophageal Atresia (EA).

The condition means that she's born without part of her food tube (esophagus) resulting in a disconnect between her mouth and stomach.

The result of this? She has to be fed through tubes ever since her date of birth on Sept 16, 2013.

Even before hitting her second birthday, she has suffered from multiple health problems such as retinal detachment and spent more hours in the operating theatre than any baby her age should endure.

Even after returning home from her first six months in the Intensive Care Unit, she was in and out of the hospital due to infections — the result of the many tubes being inserted into her tiny body.

Complications in her surgery also meant that her lungs collapsed due to excessive fluids filling up her lungs.

Understanding that nothing more could be done locally, the parents now look to the Boston Children's Hospital (located in the US) for Yujia's best shot at survival.

As they are not US citizens, the hospital bill is estimated to come up to a crazy US$1.3 million for six months' hospitialisation.

According to Shin Min Daily, the parents have already spent some $300,000.
